Spravato (esketamine) Treatment
Spravato® is a prescription nasal spray used to treat adults with treatment-resistant depression and, in some cases, depression with acute suicidal thoughts.
Esketamine works differently from traditional antidepressants and may help people who have not experienced relief from other medications.

What Is Spravato®?
Unlike standard antidepressants that act on serotonin or norepinephrine, Spravato® works on the glutamate system in the brain. This may help improve communication between brain cells and support the growth of new neural connections. Because of this unique mechanism, many patients notice improvements more quickly than with traditional antidepressants.
What to Expect During Treatment
Spravato® is self-administered as a nasal spray in the office under medical supervision.
After taking the medication, you will remain in the clinic for at least two hours so your care team can monitor you.
You will need a responsible adult to drive you home after each treatment.
Most patients receive two treatments per week weeks 1-4; one treatment per week weeks 5-8; then one treatment every one to two weeks weeks 9 and after.
How You May Feel After Treatment
It is common to experience temporary effects during or shortly after treatment, such as:
Feeling relaxed or drowsy
Mild dissociation (feeling detached or “floaty”)
Dizziness or nausea
Changes in blood pressure
These effects usually resolve within a few hours. Your provider will closely monitor you to ensure your safety and comfort.
Safety and Monitoring
Spravato® is only available through a special FDA safety program, which means:
It must be given in a certified medical setting
Patients are monitored for at least 2 hours
It cannot be taken home
This ensures the treatment is used safely and appropriately.
Who May Benefit from Spravato®?
Spravato® may be an option if:
You have tried two or more antidepressants without adequate relief
You continue to experience significant depressive symptoms
You are looking for an evidence-based option when other treatments have not worked
Your provider will review your history and determine whether Spravato® is appropriate for you.
